We have our four basic types. Now once you figured out who is who, here's how to beat them
Loose Passive: Calling station: Elephant: Mr. Wimpy Pants
The Loose Passive player is the guy , girl or monkey you want to be playing with. A LPP plays way too many starting hands and often calls down with middle pair or less. They chase after draws when it cost them too much to do so. Loose passive players are the A.T.M.s of the poker world. Make them happy, be friendly, compliment their play, these are you customers. But because they will call down to the river with bottom pair , don't bluff them . When they raise - cause they never do just fold unless you have the nuts or darn close. Try to get them heads up with you cause likely their holdings are horrid.
1 Love them
2 Isolate them
3 Make them paid for too much for their draws
4 Don't bluff them and play Quality pre-flop hands against them
5 They wont bet unless they hit it but they will call for ever God Bless them
Tight Passive: A Rock: Mr Tighty Whitey Pants
Tight Passive players are the easiest to read. They will have very good cards pre-flop. If they call they have a piece of it. If they bet ...you fold. They do sometimes find it hard to fold big slick when a ace hits so you can get paid off when the ace rag you played (and you should've) hits two pair. Don't bluff them, they likely have you beat unless you have the nuts. Don't gamble with them. How do you win against them? Relentless stealing. You raise them (in a multiplayer tourney when the antis have kicked in these guys are gold).
1 Pretend your a fool (they hate it)
2 Steal their Blinds and antis
3 Bluff them but not if they have raised or re-raise post flop
4 You will steal 3 or 4 times to every time they call or raise so if they raise feel good about folding
5 You know they have likely have AA,KK,QQ,JJ,AK and maybe AQ pre-flop. Sometimes they will set mine but if they have hit a lower set they will do you the honour of letting you know by betting and big
Loose Aggressive: Jackal: Fancy Player Syndrome: Mr Smarty Pants
Loose Aggressive players are the most fun type to watch and play against. These monkeys are skilled gamblers and crave the action. They can and will play two cards from any position at the table. These wackadoodles will play nearly every hand and will bring it in for a raise or re-raise often. Gus Hansen is one of the worlds' best at this style. This is a winning style and might work for you. They are often the table captains, that means they are controlling the table and betting rhythm from sheer will of gamble. Do not bluff or try to steal the blinds of a LAG. It will just not work. They will simply call to steal later or re-raise on the spot. Isolate them and make their loose starting requirements pay . Let them bluff so you can then check raise to get them to lay down. Make a few more calls on the river against them, they will be bluffing after all. You can't play scared against them or they will make you pay. Be patient and when you see opportunity - attack. If they keep lucking out and killing you with draws, be patient try to control the pot size, (make it a little smaller) to help in the up and downs.
1Dont bluff them – try to catch them in a bluff
2 Get heads up as much as possible knowing however they could have anything under.
3 Be patient winning a lot can happen against them but if the luck is with them it will be bad for a while
4 Oh and they are opposite betters If they bet small they have some thing big. Pot sized or bigger can often mean a bluff. Try and see if the card story makes sense. IE) Pot sized bet at the turn and a 3 of hearts which connects with nothing comes up. Could be a set ( which because it was good they would have bet small) so it is more likely a bluff.
Tight Aggressive: Shark: Player : Mr. Scary Pants
These chimps are tough. They have put you in a category and are using these skills plus more against you right now. Annoying huh. Don't bluff them, but you can semi bluff. Ok ... you think you have a tight almost rock like table image, the flops finds you with the nut high flush draw. Well sure take a stab at it and raise. They are mostly playing good preflop hands, but can and will mix it up so that you can't put them on hands easily. They will value bet to get you to think they are making a small bluff - or they could be making a small bluff thinking you will think they have the nuts and are trying to sandbag you. See, my head hurts
1 You want to be one not have to play one
2 Unless everyone at the table is tight aggressive , avoid them.
3 Have premium cards
4 If you can't spot the sucker at the table in 20 mins .... your him and find a different table
Ok now you have the skill set to keep your bananas once won (bankroll) and some basic skills to win some bananas at the low limits ( player categories and tolls to use against them). I am still trying to duplicate Chris Ferguson's bankroll challenge. I don't have the time to spend to hit the goal at quick has he did, but I want too see how far I can get and get enough to someday escape the zoo and buy a little monkey boat. If you are trying it as well or just want to share a poker story or are a chimp who can type. Then drop a comment in da box
